Making a Difference In The Fight for Our Planet

Have you ever thought about getting involved in activism, but held back because you didn’t know where to start, or didn’t think you had the right skills or knowledge, or enough time to commit?

In the face of the climate crisis and all the threats surrounding our natural world, it can be so easy to feel overwhelmed and not know where to start!

There’s also often a preconceived notion that being an activist comes with a long list of prerequisites and that not everyone can play a role in fighting for a cause they believe in. But, that couldn’t be further from the truth!

The only requirement for being an activist is to care!

The world doesn’t need a handful of perfect activists, we need a world full of imperfect activists fighting for the causes they are most passionate about.

By educating yourself about the issues we’re facing, campaigning for political change, working alongside organisations fighting for change, and using your platform to amplify the work of other activists, you can help make a difference for future generations.

Finding Your Cause

One of the most essential steps in your activism journey is identifying the cause you are most passionate about.

When you’re committed to fighting for change, it can be tempting to try to advocate for everything you care about. But, that can be ineffective, as you’re spread too thin, and it can lead to burnout and anxiety.

Finding one to two causes you most strongly resonate with, and advocating for them, is a great idea!

This can be anything from animal rights to climate action to veganism. These causes should be aligned with your values and ones that you feel drawn towards.

When you care about something, it can be difficult to feel like you’re not going at it alone. You have to remember that you’re not alone, and there are so many other incredible individuals also fighting for change, and there is so much power in that.

This isn’t to say that you can’t support other movements, but devoting your time, energy, and skills to one or two causes means you will have a greater impact.

Once you have identified the causes that are important to you, it’s essential to put yourself in the best position possible to advocate for them.

To be an effective activist, it’s important to have a deep understanding of the issues you are advocating for, the change you are demanding, and the action needed to achieve them.

Do your research, read books and articles, attend conferences and events, and talk to experts and people who have experience in the field. It’s important to remain open to learning and changing your approach as new information becomes available.

Finding Your Place in the Activism Movement

A lot of times activism is thought of as just protesting, but there is so much more to it than that!

There is no one-size fits all way to be an activist, and you do not need to fulfil every role within a movement to be a good activist.

There are so many ways to be an activist and contribute to the movement, which is why it’s important to find a space in the movement that suits your skills, passion, and time commitment.

Activism can look like volunteering, fundraising, writing letters to your elected officials, or joining protests. You can also use your specific skills, knowledge, and education to aid your activism. For example, if you are a writer, you could support the causes you care about by writing campaign material, and creating content. Or, if you are a lawyer, you could provide legal services to organisations fighting for change.

Another great way to contribute to the causes you believe in is by using your platform to amplify the messages of the individuals and organisations advocating for them. By sharing their message, you can help them reach more people and raise awareness about these critical issues.

Identifying how you want to join the movement and what form of activism aligns most with the time and resources you’re able to commit to is a great first step.

Deciding Where to Start On Your Activism Journey

Focusing your efforts locally as an activist can be an effective way to create meaningful change, especially if you are new to the movement. Starting within your community as an activist can be a powerful way to create change, gain experience, and build momentum for larger systemic change.

By focusing on issues in your community and building relationships with local leaders and community members, you can work towards tangible goals that can make a real difference in people’s lives.

Joining local activism groups and supporting local organisations relevant to the causes you are passionate about not only helps guide you along your activism journey but is also an excellent way to connect with like-minded individuals and provides you with resources and support.
