One of the biggest challenges in Kakamega Forest, Kenya’s last remaining Guineo-Congo lowland rainforest, is the spread of invasive plant species.

These aggressive plants outcompete native trees, disrupt biodiversity, and threaten the livelihoods of local communities. To protect and restore the forest, we are actively removing invasive species, allowing native plants and wildlife to flourish.

 

What Are Invasive Species and Why Are They Harmful?

An invasive species is any non-native plant that spreads rapidly and disrupts natural ecosystems. These species typically lack natural predators or control mechanisms, allowing them to dominate landscapes at the expense of native biodiversity.

Some of the most problematic invasive species in Kakamega Forest include:

  • Lantana camara – A dense shrub that spreads aggressively, choking native vegetation and preventing saplings from growing.
  • Eucalyptus species – These trees consume large amounts of water, drying out soil and reducing water availability for other plants and animals.
  • Black wattle (Acacia mearnsii) – Alters soil composition, making it difficult for indigenous plants to establish and thrive.

Why We Remove Invasive Species

Many reforestation projects focus solely on tree planting, but without addressing invasive species, young trees face extreme challenges. These fast-growing, non-native plants take over natural ecosystems, blocking sunlight, depleting nutrients, and preventing native trees from thriving.

Invasive species removal is an essential part of our restoration work because it:

  • Creates space for native trees to grow without competition.
  • Restores soil health by eliminating plants that deplete nutrients.
  • Protects water sources by reducing species that consume excessive groundwater.

  • Reduced tree regeneration – Invasive plants often form dense thickets, preventing sunlight from reaching young trees and stopping natural reforestation.
  • Soil degradation – Some invasive species deplete soil nutrients, making it harder for native species to grow.
  • Water scarcity – Fast-growing invasives, such as eucalyptus, consume excessive water, disrupting the natural hydrological cycle and impacting nearby communities.

How We Remove Invasive Species

Removing invasive species requires a careful, science-based approach to ensure long-term success without causing unintended harm to the environment. At Leaving a Legacy, we use a combination of strategies to clear invasive species and restore balance to the ecosystem.

  1. Manual Removal

For small invasive plants, we use hand-pulling methods to remove them before they spread further. This is particularly effective for young lantana and acacia plants.

  1. Selective Cutting and Thinning

For larger invasive trees, such as eucalyptus and black wattle, we selectively cut them while ensuring minimal soil disturbance. If cut incorrectly, some species can regenerate quickly, so we apply sustainable forestry methods to prevent regrowth.

  1. Soil Rehabilitation and Native Species Replanting

Once invasive plants are removed, we reintroduce indigenous plant species to restore soil fertility and encourage natural regeneration. This ensures that native trees have the best chance of survival.

  1. Community Engagement and Long-Term Monitoring
