Why disappearing wisdom is threatening both the forest and its people

Kakamega Forest is more than Kenya’s last tropical rainforest; it is a living record of how people and ecosystems once coexisted.

For generations, the communities that live around Kakamega have relied on its trees, rivers, and soils for food, medicine, and building materials. Their understanding of the forest’s plants, seasons, and species has shaped local health systems, land management, and cultural traditions.

This Indigenous knowledge is not abstract or historical. It is a practical ecological understanding developed through daily interaction, such as when to collect bark so trees can recover, which species thrive together, and how to manage firewood harvesting without degrading the canopy.

Today, that knowledge is disappearing. As older generations pass on and traditional stewardship systems weaken, the connection between people and the forest is breaking down.

When Indigenous knowledge erodes, ecosystems lose a vital layer of protection. In Kakamega, that loss is already reshaping both the forest and the communities that depend on it, leading to degraded habitats, declining biodiversity, and communities losing access to the forest resources.

For the communities that have long lived around Kakamega, including the Isukha, Idakho, and Tiriki, the forest has always been a teacher and healer.

Elders could identify hundreds of plant species by name and use, roots and bark were harvested for medicine, and leaves were boiled to soothe fevers. Certain trees were never cut because they were homes to spirits or nesting birds. Others were pruned in specific ways to encourage regrowth.

This traditional stewardship worked as an unwritten management system. It regulated how people gathered fuelwood, honey, or wild foods. It dictated which streams could be used during the dry season and which areas were off-limits for grazing.

Over time, this body of Indigenous ecological knowledge helped sustain both biodiversity and livelihoods. It ensured that Kakamega’s complex ecosystems of  primates, birds, insects, and plants,  remained intact even as people relied on it daily.

What happens when traditional knowledge disappears

Across western Kenya, the balance between people and the forest ecosystem is breaking down.

Colonial land policies first restricted local access to the forest, severing traditional governance systems that had long maintained ecological order. After independence, national forest regulations that were put in place often continued to exclude indigenous practices, treating local knowledge as informal or outdated.

In recent decades, economic pressures have accelerated this disconnect between the forest and those that live closest to it. Younger generations are increasingly moving to towns, leaving behind the daily interactions through which forest wisdom was once passed down.

Furthermore, school curriculums nowadays rarely include local ecology, and elders who still hold deep knowledge of the forest are ageing, often without apprentices to continue their work.

This erosion of knowledge has tangible ecological effects. Without traditional harvest limits and taboos, over-extraction has become more common. As such, medicinal plant populations are in decline, and streams that were once protected by customary rules are polluted or diverted.

When this knowledge disappears, the practical skills that once guided sustainable resource use, such as selective harvesting, species identification, and soil management, begin to fade, leading to unsustainable use and slower ecological recovery.

The cultural cost of losing Indigenous knowledge

The loss of Indigenous knowledge isn’t only an environmental issue, it’s a cultural one too.

Many elders describe the forest as an ancestor, a living being that provides, warns, and shelters.

Ceremonies once held beneath sacred trees connected people to that living world, marking seasons, births, and harvests. These traditions taught respect and restraint, reminding each generation that the forest was a shared inheritance, not a resource to be exhausted.

Today, many of those rituals have vanished. Along with them, sacred groves that were once protected through custom and ritual have been converted for agriculture, and the knowledge attached to them is fading with the generations who maintained it.

Younger community members often recognise introduced species such as eucalyptus and grevillea, yet are unfamiliar with the native trees that define Kakamega’s ecological identity.

As these cultural connections weaken, conservation becomes increasingly detached from local priorities. Forest protection shifts from being a shared community responsibility to an externally managed process led by rangers, authorities and outside organisations. This separation has contributed to tension between conservation rules and daily livelihood needs, even though both ultimately depend on the forest’s long-term health.

Science alone can’t restore what’s been lost

In recent years, reforestation projects across Kakamega have aimed to replant trees, manage invasive species, and rebuild degraded zones. Yet these efforts often fall short of long-term success.

Seedlings are planted, but local communities are rarely involved in species selection or site care and ongoing management. Exotic species like grevillea and eucalyptus are sometimes used for quick canopy cover, altering soil chemistry and crowding out native flora. Without the ecological knowledge once embedded in community practice, restoration efforts risk focusing on short-term planting targets rather than long-term ecosystem function and regeneration.

Scientific approaches offer essential data, but they cannot replace generations of observation and adaptation. Indigenous knowledge systems, refined through centuries of lived experience, often include insights into microclimates, soil moisture, and plant succession that modern management overlooks.

When the two forms of knowledge work together, restoration becomes far more resilient.

Reconnecting people and forest

Protecting Kakamega means protecting its knowledge

Kakamega Forest’s survival depends as much on cultural restoration as it does on ecological repair.

Losing Indigenous knowledge doesn’t just erase the past; it removes the very tools that communities once used to safeguard their environment.

When Indigenous knowledge is lost, conservation loses the insight needed to make restoration relevant and effective on the ground. The people who live closest to the forest hold practical understanding of local soils, water systems, and species behaviour,  knowledge that complements scientific data and strengthens long-term management.

Our work in Kakamega focuses on bringing these two forms of knowledge together. We partner with local organisations and communities to honour traditional ecological practices, integrate them into restoration planning, and create pathways for community members to take active roles in restoration and monitoring.
