However, in many places, restoration occurs daily, in ways we often overlook, carried out by paws, wings, and even trunks.

Around the world, wildlife plays a crucial role in reforesting degraded land. From the tiniest squirrel to the largest elephant, animals act as natural seed dispersers, unintentionally planting the future as they forage, travel, and survive.

Squirrels and Agoutis

Squirrels and agoutis are well-known for burying seeds to eat later but they don’t always remember where. These “lost” seeds often germinate into new trees, especially in forested or recovering areas.

In fact, much of the regrowth seen in temperate and tropical ecosystems can be traced back to these small but mighty rodents.

By scattering seeds across wide areas and inadvertently choosing diverse, nutrient-rich planting spots, squirrels and agoutis help ensure healthy, varied forests. They’re nature’s original guerrilla gardeners, quietly restoring balance, one buried nut at a time.

Fruit Bats

Fruit bats don’t just travel long distances, they also carry forests with them. As they feed on fruit and fly over degraded landscapes, they drop seeds in their droppings, unintentionally sowing new life where it’s needed most.

This form of seed dispersal is especially vital in tropical regions, where bats help reforest logged or burnt areas. Due to their travel distances, fruit bats link isolated patches of habitat and accelerate regeneration at scale.

Without them, many species of figs, palms, and pioneer trees would struggle to spread.

Birds:

Birds are another powerful force in natural regeneration. Frugivorous birds, those that eat fruit, disperse seeds as they fly between trees, perching and dropping seeds into disturbed or open areas.

This movement is essential for forest recovery after deforestation, storms, or fires. Birds carry seeds into new spaces, often reaching inaccessible or remote areas that humans can’t easily plant.

Their movements create patches of young forest that can grow into diverse, resilient ecosystems. They may be small, but their impact is anything but.

Elephants:

Elephants are often called ecosystem engineers, and for good reason!

As they travel across vast distances, they eat hundreds of pounds of vegetation a day, including fruits with large, hard seeds. These seeds pass through their digestive systems and are deposited complete with natural fertiliser in new locations.

In doing so, elephants help spread tree species that few other animals can, maintaining diversity and structure in forest ecosystems. Their wide-ranging movements mean they can bridge gaps between forest patches, helping fragmented landscapes reconnect.
