Mangroves are some of the most effective carbon sinks on the planet, storing vast amounts of carbon in their roots and soil. Their role in stabilising the climate is critical, but it’s not their only value.

We often overlook the fact that mangroves are also thriving ecosystems, home to thousands of species that rely on them for food, shelter, and survival. From fish nurseries to bird rookeries, mangrove forests support complex webs of life that would collapse without them. Over 1,500 species depend on these forests to survive.

Yet these habitats are disappearing, and with them, the species that depend on their roots, canopies, and shorelines to survive.

Mangroves Are A Disappearing Lifeline

Despite their importance, mangroves are under threat. Around the world, mangrove deforestation is accelerating, driven by coastal development, pollution, aquaculture, and rising sea levels. In some regions, over 50% of mangrove cover has already been lost.

What happens when these forests vanish? Entire food webs begin to collapse. Without the dense roots of mangroves to anchor coastlines, erosion takes hold. Without shelter, species lose their young. Without the trees themselves, the tide of extinction rises.

Mangrove loss isn’t just a local concern. This is a global biodiversity crisis, quietly unfolding in the margins of our coastlines.

Species That Depend on Mangroves to Survive

Across the globe, over 1,500 species depend on mangrove ecosystems for their survival. These forests are more than just a habitat; they are breeding grounds, feeding areas, protective shelters, and lifelines for some of the world’s most threatened wildlife. When mangroves disappear, so do the conditions that allow these species to thrive.

 

Smalltooth Sawfish (Pristis pectinata)

Conservation status: Critically Endangered

The smalltooth sawfish is a distinctive, ray-like species known for its long, toothed snout. Juveniles rely on mangrove forests as nursery grounds, using the tangled root systems for shelter from predators and as a safe space to grow.

Without these protective zones, young sawfish are left exposed in open waters, drastically reducing their chances of survival. Decades of coastal degradation and mangrove loss have played a major role in the population decline of this species, making restoration efforts critical to its recovery.

Lesser Adjutant Stork (Leptoptilos javanicus)

Conservation status: Vulnerable

This large, solitary stork is rarely seen outside wetland ecosystems, and mangrove swamps are a vital part of its range. It nests in tall mangrove trees, where it can safely raise chicks away from ground predators.

It also depends on the rich aquatic food sources found in mangrove systems, including fish, frogs, and crustaceans. As mangrove forests are cleared or degraded, both their nesting habitats and food supplies become increasingly scarce.

Smooth-Coated Otter (Lutrogale perspicillata)

Conservation status: Vulnerable

Highly adapted to aquatic environments, smooth-coated otters rely on mangroves for both shelter and sustenance. These otters often create dens along mangrove-lined riverbanks and hunt for fish in the surrounding waters.

Their social behaviour and dependence on healthy fish populations mean that they are directly affected by mangrove health. Habitat fragmentation and water pollution, both exacerbated by mangrove loss, threaten their continued survival.

Proboscis Monkey (Nasalis larvatus)

Conservation status: Endangered

Endemic to Borneo, the proboscis monkey is one of the most recognisable primates in Southeast Asia. Its entire way of life is tied to mangrove and riverine forests.

These monkeys feed on mangrove leaves and fruit, sleep in the trees, and use river channels for travel. Unlike more adaptable primates, proboscis monkeys cannot simply shift to new habitats when their mangrove homes are destroyed. As coastal development encroaches on their range, their populations have plummeted.

Livingstone’s Fruit Bat (Pteropus livingstonii)

Conservation status: Endangered

Native to the Comoros Islands, this fruit bat is critically dependent on intact coastal and mangrove forests for survival. It roosts in the upper canopies and forages for nectar, pollen, and fruit, playing a vital role in seed dispersal and pollination.

Habitat loss remains the largest threat to this already vulnerable species. The decline of mangroves doesn’t just impact the bats themselves; it also weakens the forest regeneration they help support.

Each of these species depends on mangrove ecosystems for food, shelter, and survival. Without mangroves, they face habitat loss, population decline, and eventual extinction. Protecting and restoring mangroves is essential to preserving biodiversity and ensuring that these species have a future.

What We’re Doing To Restore Mangroves

At Leaving a Legacy, we believe that restoring mangrove forests is one of the most powerful ways to protect biodiversity and support climate resilience.

Our work in places like Mkupe Conservancy, Kenya, focuses on replanting native mangrove species while engaging and supporting local communities. We take a holistic approach: combining ecological restoration with education, community-led stewardship, and long-term care.

Mangrove restoration is not just about planting trees. It’s about creating living, thriving ecosystems that can support future generations, human and wildlife alike.

When we restore mangroves, we restore safe nurseries for endangered fish. We bring back feeding grounds for storks and otters. We offer fruit bats a place to roost. We give the proboscis monkey a fighting chance.

Mangroves also protect coastlines from storm surges, provide sustainable livelihoods for local fishers, and support water filtration that keeps communities healthy.
